Comparing Beauty: A Look at Northern Areas and Well-Known Tourist Destinations

As residents of the northern areas, we weren’t particularly mesmerized by these places, except for the well-maintained roads and modern facilities we saw there.

Now, I am visiting Dir, Kumrat, and Chitral with the same friend, and everything is mesmerizing us except for the road conditions and facilities in these areas.

Let’s examine the major differences between the northern areas and these popular tourist spots.

Abbottabad

Abbottabad is a historical place with well-paved roads and modern facilities, making it a convenient starting point for exploring the surrounding areas.

Its bustling streets and vibrant markets offer a glimpse into the local culture, while its hotels and resorts provide comfortable accommodations.

However, Abbottabad has little in store for nature-loving tourists. One feels trapped by the same urban, mechanic life from which one had to escape.

Compared to the untamed beauty of the Northern Areas, Abbottabad’s allure lies in its accessibility and the variety of adventure activities it offers, such as hiking, paragliding, and rock climbing.

Despite the lack of untouched landscapes, Abbottabad presents a fusion of urban convenience and outdoor escapades.

Galliat

Just a short drive from Abbottabad lies Galliat, a region renowned for its cool climate and picturesque surroundings.

The well-maintained roads winding through lush green hills make for a pleasant journey.

Galliat strikes a balance between natural beauty and modern amenities, with comfortable resorts, restaurants, and recreational activities available.

Having said that, Galliat offers no large landscape, let alone sky-high mountains, lakes, and brooks.

I remember when my friend asked me to take his pictures, and I said, “I will take a picture that will look like it was taken against a grass wall with no background and landscape.”

We spent the night in a hotel that charged us less than their usual rates, given that it was winter and seasoned visitors were rare. We found Galliat to be more expensive and less attractive. Yes, the roads and other facilities were stunning.

Murree

For decades, Murree has been hailed as the queen of hill stations a few miles away from the capital.

Its popularity stems from its proximity to major cities, excellent road infrastructure, and well-developed tourist facilities.

The Mall Road in Murree bustles with activity, featuring shops, cafes, and entertainment options. Marri, on the other hand, lacks the untouched natural landscapes found in the northern areas and feels more like a luxury spot for affluent individuals. Its city-like appearance and busy roads diminish its appeal to nature-loving tourists.

Comparatively, Galliat and Marri offer some beauty with their forests, weather, and pasturing mountains. Visitors find attraction in the lush green hills, pine trees, self-grown grass, chilling wind, and floating clouds.

However, there is a stark difference when we are comparing these areas to the northern areas.

The Northern Areas: Nature Unleashed

The northern areas of Pakistan are a tapestry of awe-inspiring mountains, shimmering brooks, and untamed landscapes that leave travelers spellbound.

While the roads and facilities here may not match the standards of the previously mentioned regions, it is the untouched beauty that steals the show.

Dir, Kumrat, and Chitral are nature’s masterpieces, offering unspoiled charm and majestic beauty.

Dir

Situated in the captivating Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Dir serves as the perfect getaway for immersing oneself in the raw beauty and unspoiled nature of the region.

Positioned at the foot of the Hindu Kush mountain range, Dir is blessed with breathtaking landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and an enchanting mix of cultural heritage. Its awe-inspiring views of snow-capped mountains, carpeted meadows, and meandering rivers left us speechless.

Kumrat Valley

Nestled in the lap of nature, Kumrat Valley stands as a hidden gem in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

This enchanting valley is a haven for nature enthusiasts, boasting breathtaking features that create an awe-inspiring tapestry of beauty.

Dense forests, glacial streams, majestic mountains, and mesmerizing lakes make Kumrat Valley a truly remarkable destination.

However, the road conditions in Kumrat Valley have deteriorated over the years, and the lack of attention from the government has taken away its natural beauty.

Chitral

Located in the embrace of the Hindu Kush Mountains, the Chitral district is a captivating destination that seamlessly blends natural splendor with rich cultural heritage.

This enchanting region offers a mesmerizing tapestry of breathtaking landscapes, warm hospitality, and a vibrant array of traditions.

As you venture into Chitral, you are greeted by tall mountains devoid of the lush greenery typically associated with other landscapes.

Yet, their rugged beauty and grandeur paint an awe-inspiring and unique portrait. These majestic peaks create a dramatic backdrop, commanding attention and setting the stage for the adventures that lie ahead.

Chitral’s allure extends beyond its natural wonders; it is also a cultural treasure trove. The district is renowned for its rich traditions and the warmth of its people.

The Kalash Valleys, nestled in the heart of Chitral, are a living testament to a vibrant ancient culture. The unique customs, festivals, and colorful attire of the Kalash people add a captivating touch to the region’s cultural tapestry.

In Chitral, nature’s raw beauty intertwines with a rich cultural tapestry. It is a place where mountains inspire awe, meadows enchant with their tranquility, and forests whisper tales of ancient wisdom.

Amidst the warm hospitality and cultural heritage, Chitral invites you to embark on a journey of discovery, where you can immerse yourself in the harmony of nature and celebrate the enduring spirit of its people.

Again, Chitral, like Dir and Kumrat, lacks well-paved roads and other facilities that Abbottabad, Galiat, and Marri enjoy.

When we visit those refined and modernized areas with paved roads and facilities and compare them to our earthen, rugged, and unpaved roads, devoid of modern amenities, we think as if the northern areas are not part of this country.

We feel abandoned, deserted, and ignored, despite the blessings of nature bestowed upon us.

If half of what has been done for the northern areas had been showered upon Chitral, we would be living in paradise.

It feels like we live in a paradise where the roads are constructed as if they were meant for hell.
